VERTICAL MONEY

Martti Helde
EE, 2024, 86 Min

Estonia is widely regarded as a model example of post-communist transformation – organised, digitalised, Europeanised and blessed with wonderful nature. The latter finds itself under acute threat however; its forests are being cut down at a breathtaking pace – even in nature reserves.

In a multi-voiced montage, conservationists describe their concern for Estonian forests. In their opinion, these would be able to cope perfectly well without forestry. Forests are complex systems that constantly renew themselves. Elements old and new, above- and below-ground, static and mobile are interconnected and external interventions disrupt this fragile balance.

Business officials also have their say. Representatives from politics and the timber industry - closely interlinked given the Ministry of the Environment is responsible for both the protection and marketing of forests – see, above all, the money that is in the trees and refer to the clearing thereof as forest care.

The film makes no secret of which side it is on. A statement in support of sustainable forest management that finds support in the form of numerous expert statements, in turn illustrated with images of the forests, as well as their exploitation and, at times, complete destruction.
