With a sense of awe and impatience, the men of the family await the arrival of a car from which the main protagonist of this important day, the butcher, finally emerges. He has been called in to kill the pig, which is then to be processed into meat and sausage in this most convivial of environments. And yet the butcher has a problem; the ammunition for his pistol has gotten wet, and so the gun may not work. The neighbour, in turn, has a problem with this home slaughter, now illegal under EU law, and threatens to report the family to the police. The men in the family, who have drunken a fair amount at this point, indeed have a problem with this very law, since they want everything to proceed as it always has done. The grandparents have long since had enough of all this pig farming, their grown-up daughters struggle with their husbands' attitudes - and nothing is longer the way it used to be.

Director Adam Martinec himself comes from the countryside and knows these kinds of family gatherings and home slaughters down to the smallest detail. Like the directors of the New Wave, he works with amateur actors, even going as far as to give his own father a role. This is another reason why the film, in its attempts to break down all manner of stereotypes, seems so fresh and authentic.
