THE VILLAGE

THE VILLAGE

Serik Aprimov
KAZ, 2022, 105 Min

Village intrigue meets urban naivety. A young filmmaker from the city stumbles into the chaotic life of a Kazakh village. Little dramas, old rites and a touch of humor.

An unexpected culture clash shakes up the life of a young, ambitious director when he gets lost while searching for a lake. He actually wanted to document fishermen at work, but instead he ends up in an aul, a Kazakh village, at night. Soon, his heads starts spinning. First a dinner, then a hookup. Mastermind Yerbolat is after him. With subtle humor and a sensitive eye for urban-rural antagonisms, Serik Aprymov tells a story of humanity and complex social dynamics in a rural microcosm. He pointedly shows how different perspectives on life can be, but he also gives hope that we can still come together.
