KILLER

KILLER

Darezhan Omirbayev
FR/KAZ, 1998, 75 Min

Murder in exchange for a life. Marat is a chauffeur who fell into debt after a traffic accident. When his baby falls ill, he agrees to murder a journalist, but the guilt weighs heavily on him.

Inspired by Dostoyevsky's CRIME AND PUNISHMENT, KILLER is a captivating ride through the depths of the human soul, directed by the grand master of Kazakh cinema, who won the Un Certain Regard Prize at Cannes in 1998. Overburdened with debts and with a seriously ill baby, Marat sees no other way out after a traffic accident than to accept an immoral offer: he agrees to murder a journalist in return for money with which he can save his child's life. With unusual camera angles and a noticeable similarity to the films of Robert Bresson, Omirbayev forces his audience to constantly question what they see and at the same time finds a cinematic expression for the increasing burden of guilt on Marat's shoulders. A gripping journey to the limits of one's own morality and through the Kazakhstan of that time.
