This dark comedy takes us back to the communist
Albania of the seventies. When Hekuran,
patriarch of the Roma community in
a small town in south Albania, resolves to
name his ninth child in honour of Mao Zedong,
he doesn't reckon with the ways in
which the Communist Party as well as the
Chinese embassy will react, not to mention
the effect his decision will have on the Roma
community as a whole. Things quickly
change however as a result of the Sino-Albanian
split of 1978. Based on the novel of
Albanian author Besnik Mustafaj, also the
scriptwriter of this film.
