THE CHOICE

Igor Fedorov
RU, 2023, 77 Min

Collapse of the economic system – a country in a debt trap. A bank's telephone service operator sits in home office and has to deal with the existential fears of his customers. One of them puts a laser pointer on his chest, directly from the house across the street. Independently produced one-man chamber drama thriller from Russia, staged in a maximally gripping manner with minimal resources and thoroughly metaphorical.

Sadov, the psychopath, needs money. He puts the telephone operator under pressure, knows what nonsense is written on his T-shirt, where his wife and child live, what leftover junk food is under his desk. The initial everyday cynicism in home office gives way to panic, the sadistic voice from his headset plays him like the snake plays the rabbit, anything is possible. There is no help from the anonymous threat from the window across the street – the boss doesn't want to change any password, the security keeps making stupid jokes as if nothing’s happening, while the red laser dot slowly moves from the forehead to the chest and back. Debut made on a mini-budget about the private apocalypse in a society in which the law no longer applies, people get their way through violence and cool poses and quick sayings are no longer of any use to get oneself out of the tricky situation.
