STRAJK – DIE HELDIN VON DANZIG

Volker Schlöndorff
DE/PL, 2006, 104 Min

From shipyard to world history. Gripping biopic by Volker Schlöndorff. A crane operator rebels against Poland's socialist system and becomes a secret legend in the hope of a better future for her son.

In the smoking halls of a Gdansk shipyard, single mother Agnieszka works to the point of exhaustion. Her hard work does not go unnoticed and she is honored several times as a “hero of work”. But when she witnesses a fatal accident, she can no longer remain silent and becomes the voice of the outraged workers and the target of terrible reprisals. With unwavering courage, Agnieszka confronts the management and demands better working conditions, while a beginning strike movement soon spreads across the entire country. Katharina Thalbach brilliantly embodies the passionately fearless Agnieszka, who never lets herself be defeated despite all adversities. Schlöndorff's STRAJK - DIE HELDIN VON DANZIG (Heroine of Gdansk) unfolds as a deeply moving chronicle about the unwavering will of a woman and a nation who rebels against the oppression of a corrupt system and for justice and thus launches a new era.
