IT CAME FROM THE WATER

Xawery Żuławski
PL, 2022, 120 Min

Peace, rave, sex, lots of drugs and nature's revenge: Shortly after Corona, the nouveau riche's son Kamil lets loose in his father's villa on the coast of the Baltic Sea. But Dad makes his millions by dumping toxins in the sea - everyone who bathes there becomes a demon. Poland's first zombie film is a furious pop art fantasy eco-comedy thriller.

After almost two years in lockdown, it’s time for a big party: Kamil invites to the mega event in his father's palace, the castle is built in the 17th century, the pool just recently. But the fertilizer dumped in the Baltic Sea allows cyanobacteria to grow, with consequences for everyone who goes into the water there. The celebration of love is not only disturbed by a group of right-wing extremist hooligans and the local club mafiosi (he is angry that he doesn't earn anything from Kamil's party), but also because all the partygoers soon become zombies. Except for six, who remained human under the leadership of the clever apocalyptist Blitz, grunge rocker and self-proclaimed guardian of the forest. Director Xawery Żuławski has made a name for himself with his skillfully eclectic cinematic mock marriage between genre film and film d’ateur, IT CAME FROM THE WATER is more of a commercial kind of cinema, albeit consistently crazy.
