While the adults are caught up in a certain routine, the boys rebel and live life to the full. Twelve-year-olds Antonio and Nikola are best friends. They live in neighbouring single-family houses, both of which have seen better days. Their families have fallen out. Above all, Nikola's embittered grandmother and Antonio's domineering grandfather stir up what is a rather petty conflict over a missing water pipe. Yet the boys couldn’t care less: They prefer to experiment with carbide, initially blowing up cans, and later even a rubbish bin. They film themselves in the hope of becoming YouTube stars. In this, his cinema debut, director Josip Žuvan precisely captures how trivial things and everyday lies can, over time, turn into physical disagreements of enormous explosive power and, at the same time, delivers a stirring coming-of-age drama about a friendship that is put to the test.

Josip Josip Žuvan - Born in 1987 in Trogir. In 2012 he graduated MA of Film and TV Directing (fiction film) at the Academy of Dramatic Arts in Zagreb with short film ‘’Snow’’, filmed in co-production with Croatian radiotelevision. His short fiction and animated films are shown at many international festivals. He currently works as a writer, director and creative producer at numerous commercial TV formats. He is a member of Croatian Film director’s guild. "Carbide" is his first feature film.
