The Cemil Show

Bariş Sarhan
Turkey, 2020, 106 Min

A role reversal: Cemil, an awkward security guard from any conceivable shopping mall, emulates his role model, B-movie actor Turgay Göral. Gradually he undergoes an evolution from wimp to the role of eternal screen villain in this tongue-in-cheek yet melancholic allusion to the golden age of Turkish cinema.

During the casting for a film noir remake Cemil fails: he stiffly gropes after the female figure he has just kidnapped. No sex appeal, no rough charm, no pencil beard like his idol who played the villain in almost a hundred films and claims that his success was based on "having deceived the good and defeated the weak". Cemil follows in Göral's footsteps and even tries to make the acquaintance of the latter's daughter in this homage to the legendary Yeşilcam era and its popular genre films, which flooded Turkish cinema screens, most notably during the 1960s. Up to 300 films were made each year. Often curious reinterpretations of successful world cinema hits, full of crime, irony and characters to identify with that nobody really took seriously. Except that is for Cemil, whose very life itself develops into a genre film.
