People Out There

Aik Karapetian
Latvia, 2012, 90 Min
Wide Management

The urban drama of the neglected criminal youth of Riga's suburbian centers around Jan, a 20 year old young man, who purposelessly rambles around with his fellow buddies. Through urban landscapes, recalling any ex-Soviet city of blockhouses, the camera follows them being engaged with small time crooks, thieveries, and small pleasures. Until Jan meets stylish and aloof Sabina, who belongs to “the other side” – the ”golden youth“. She becomes his purpose - and it could be his turning point, his stimulus to become better...

A bold directorial debut of Armenian born Latvian director Aik Karapetian portrays the nature of a human being under the bad influences, a man who tries to break through a self-sustaining vicious circle... The film aptly characterizes a contemporary society in Latvia, not forgetting to include the attributes of the new capitalistic countries, such as demonstrative consumerism, new-age salvation practices, and shady home-based businesses. Produced in Latvia, PEOPLE OUT THERE is the first Russian speaking film after the regained independence. In a society where almost half of the population identifies itself as Russians, the film portrays as well as it triggers the latent issues of bilingualism.
