Stojan's wife Nada quickly grows annoyed by all the attention. The thing has to go and a hat is obviously not a permanent solution. When even a thorough washing of his hair doesn't help, she proceeds to force her husband to a endure an extensive course on matters of sin. A little gluttony here, a little adultery there. It all has little effect on the noble nimbus however; Instead Stojan plows through all the deadly sins, finally finding pleasure in cruelty. And he isn't the only one. The more heartlessly Stojan drives home his advantage, the more readily he is accepted by his neighbours as a moral authority: it turns out that his wondrous glow shines brighter than even the worst sacrilege.
The story of Stojan's rise is only the spectacular prelude to Srdjan Dragojević's three-episode satire HEAVENS ABOVE in which, in addition to sanctimonious halos, an abandonment by God and edible works of art also feature. The director of PARADA succeeds in creating a furious yet grotesque stock-taking of a post-social Europe; at once an insidious, extremely entertaining and also remarkably astute account of the power of the image and the pleasure of projection.
