Fire

Alexey Nuzhny
Russia, 2020, 131 Min

Caution, hot! This Russian blockbuster, set to an inferno of flames, is drama of the very highest order. Moving at breakneck speed a group of firefighters battles its way through the burning forests of Siberia to save the inhabitants of a remote village; they however, out of sheer stubbornness, do not wish to be rescued. Thus begins an absurd yet daring fight against the approaching conflagration.

While the firefighters are dropped into this Siberian sea of flames, young Katya fights relentlessly to ensure them supplies and support back at base: she would appear to be the only one to recognise that the flames have the potential to trap the men. The team also includes her father Sokolov and new boyfriend Roman, whom Sokolov took along to a fitness assessment even though he hadn't had any training. All the while the residents of a remote village refuse to be rescued as they are in the middle of a wedding. The struggle inexorably grows more acute in both camps: Disaster looms! Alexey Nuzhny has managed here to create an action thriller that is both highly explosive and highly topical, complete with breathtakingly high production value and intertwined fates, that is full of drama and humour. The struggle between man and nature is brought to the screen here in a manner at once colossal and captivating.
