Die Wälder Sind Noch Grün

It's August 1917 and the First World War has already entered its third year. In the Julian Alps along the border river of Isonzo a cruel static battle is in progress between Italian and Austrian troops. After three months on the front lines nineteen-year-old craftsman-son Lindner is transferred to an isolated artillery outlook post, aka “Station R”, located on the mountain slopes. Here he's responsible for the field telephone and thus the post's communications with the outside world. As the front lines draw closer Lindner is injured in a grenade attack, Haffner is killed and the Jewish captain Kopetzky loses a leg. Lindner requests assistance, but the rescue squad is destroyed by an Italian attack. Together with the badly-injured captain and his deceased comrade the young man waits, in vain, for help in a desolate mountain cabin; Provisions start to run out, the sounds of war draw closer. Practically in a state of delirium, the captain recalls his childhood; In his dreamlike state Lindner imagines himself face-to-face with the captains of war. This anti-war drama evolves a sense of tension to a backdrop of the senseless storm of steel and agony, jumping between intimate scenes and mountain panorama views. The script for Slovenian director Marko Nabersnik's third feature film was written together with the film's Austrian producer Robert Hofferer. Jakob Lindner is played by the Austrian-Slovenian actor Michael Kristof, his début appearance.
