Prior to the war camp commandant Kraft was a prize boxer, now he trains with a sandbag. When he discovers that one of the camp inmates is also a boxer he spares his life, instead preferring to have him nursed back to health so that he can serve as a sparring partner. This initially saves the life of prisoner Kominek, and yet his fellow prisoners now suspect he is working together with the Germans. Polish prisoner Venžlák, who used to work for a boxing club, takes him under his wing and trains him. Ultimately it comes to a decisive battle that changes everything; forever. The most famous of Peter Solan's works, the film convinces with its unemotional presentation, devoid of melodrama. In this unusual tale of everyday life in the camp he analyses a power structure and those at its mercy, all the while capturing, almost incidentally, unforgettable images of the horrors of the Nazi regime's extermination policy.
