Last Year Titanic

Andreas Voigt
Germany, 1990, 101 Min

In the midst of upheaval, in the last year of the still existent GDR, Andreas Voigt, the great chronicler of the German East, explores "his" Leipzig. Everything is in motion: individual fates are turned upside down and destinies are determined by change, as born witness to by these tales of new beginnings and upheavals.

Between December 1989 and December 1990 Voigt describes the GDR and those he encounters in different shades of grey. Whilst some see the coming of a new spirit, others see portents of something monstrous. The Deutsche Mark will soon replace the "Ostmark". Some cast the old aside and dive into the new world now open to travellers from the East, others even move there straight away; like Sylvia, who locks up her store forever in order to follow her husband to the West. Those who depart leave others behind.

Free elections are pending, Helmut Kohl wants to be elected Chancellor of a united country while the young Gregor Gysi asks for votes from his follows. Neo-Nazis fight for influence on the streets, Redskins like squatter John, who goes shopping with his disabled neighbour, oppose them with all their might.
