On June 25th 1991 Slovenia declared its
independence. The new government summoned
nationals from the other former
Yugoslav republics to either take up citizenship
within six months or leave. Those who
opted for the latter were removed from the
civil registry in February 1992, regardless of
how long they might have lived in Slovenia
or even been born there. Over night an
estimated 20,000 persons, including 6,000
children, were deprived of a legal identity.
Damjan Kozole tells the story of three
youngsters exemplary of the fate which
befell thousands: Aleksandar Jovanović
wanders around a housing estate and
speaks of childhood memories, his primary
school included. It was never an issue for
him that his parents came from Serbia,
that was until his family went on holiday
trip to their old homeland when he was
aged thirteen; The holiday lasted twenty
years. Officer's daughter Katarina Keček
spent her whole youth in Slovenia before
losing everything as a young student: Her
parents, her flat and her citizenship.
Nisveta Lovec arrived in Slovenia in 1977
from Bosnia; After the declaration of independence
she gave birth to daughter Nives,
who spent the first two years of her life
without a birth certificate. The three protagonists
tell highly personal tales intermixed
with state television footage on Slovenian
independence and the statements of fellow
contemporary witnesses.
