After the fall of the Berlin Wall the young Turk Niyazi moves from the west of Berlin, where he lives and works, to the east of the city. Pragmatism drives him, he wants to save money and return to his beloved Istanbul. Rents are significantly cheaper in the east. Thus he's on the lookout for a pretty girl who wants to share an apartment with him. He meets the stand-offish Klara. She is looking for happiness yet doesn't know where to find it. Niyazi and Klara do not understand each other, in the literal sense of the word, and yet they could be meant for one another. They both have what they are looking for in each other. Dresen wrote the script for the film based on motifs from the story "Romeo" by Jurek Becker (whose works number DARLING KREUZBERG) together with Laila Stieler, who also contributed the screenplay for Dresen's GUNDERMANN.
