On the eve of the industrial revolution 26-year-old Karl Marx lives in exile in France together with his wife Jenny. When Marx is introduced to the young Friedrich Engels, the notoriously bankrupt family man has nothing but contempt for the groomed bourgeois and son of a factory owner. Yet the dandy Engels has just written about the impoverishment of the English proletariat; he loves Mary Burns, a cotton spinner and rebel of the English labour movement. Engels knows what he's talking about. It is the last piece of the puzzle that Marx is lacking in order to complete his no-holds-barred description of the crisis.
