During the civil war between Georgia and
Abkhazia in 1992 the local Estonian minority
was caught in the crossfire. When Ivo
takes in two badly injured combatants, the
Chechen Ahmed and the Georgian Nika,
conflict again threatens to break out between
the two, not to mention the bleak
outlook for the annual mandarin harvest.
MANDARIINID is a humanistic reflection
on a war in which hitherto neighbours are
suddenly transformed into warriors and
antagonists. Zaza Urushadze has a unique
ability to skillfully combine entertainment
and tension with an unmistakable eye for
artistic sophistication.
