Alice used to be a doctor and Petros a banker, then came the crisis and the couple's flight to the countryside, where they now live in a luxury villa. Everything would appear to be fine. Yet Petros is nothing more than a custodian, with the actual owner of the villa on a business trip. Nevertheless, in the presence of old friends from Athens Alice and Petros pretend to be on a carefree break in the country, an arrangement that comes to look increasingly fragile, and this all before the owner unexpectedly turns up.
Michalis Konstantato's complex social metaphor dissects the story of a couple doomed by their inability to confront the common dilemma they find themselves faced with. In images of minimalist elegance he hints at the aggression that simmers under the seemingly flawless facade of the modern world. There is an ominous tension in the air. How can a new beginning succeed when the starting point is already based on faulty foundations? Alice and Petros find themselves increasingly entangled in contradictions. The noose is slowly tightening. JJ
