Monika wants to become a professional singer. Together with her mother Jolanta the thirteen-year-old moves from one family celebration or funeral to the next in Dublin's Lithuanian community. But while the daughter dreams of a performance in the "Castle", where Elton John is said to have once performed, her mother gives the daughter's keyboard away. Instead of serving as pianist from one celebration to the next Jolanta is to both take care of her dementia-suffering grandmother and keep the family afloat with a job in a local fish factory, a balancing act that Monika refuses to perform. Obsessed with her dream, she forges ahead with her plan to perform in the legendary "Castle". A profound coming-of-age story complete with a sensational leading actress, well-rounded dramaturgy and focused imagery. All the while the focus is on three generations of women who all prove both confident and strong in forging a path for themselves abroad. NaF
