The Living Man

Oleg Novković
Serbia, Bulgaria, Germany, 2020, 97 Min

A melancholic rock ‘n‘ roll comedy about the wild life of days gone by. Musician Đela drifts along together with his wife Sunčica and their three grown-up children. They've often cheated, fought and ultimately tolerated one another. With sufficient supplies of alcohol it could go on and on, yet in one last wild riot, Đela begins a brilliant journey to the limits of his own imagination.

The son's girlfriend is secretly flirting with the father. Shortly afterwards it emerges that daughter Vida has gotten pregnant by accident. Life is a mess and yet ageing rocker Đela has seen it all before. While his wife is busy destroying the children's room in a fit of rage, he treats himself to a first raki for breakfast. In memory of his band colleague Cera, who died of an overdose, and meanwhile courts the next best woman, the next-door neighbour. Only when Sunčica reveals to him that his son is not in fact his, but that of his deceased friend, is he knocked off balance. Disappointed, he leaves his family. The result is a transcendent film experience in Western-style cowboy boots; from excess via resurrection to repentance. In an emotionally-intelligent approach Oleg Novković, a regular guest at the FilmFestival Cottbus, explores the questions of when a man is really alive and what constitutes freedom. JJ
