POMARAŃCZOWA ALTERNATYWA

ORANGE ALTERNATIVE

Mirosław Dembiński
Poland, 1988, 21 Min

In the mid-eighties street-art images of dwarves start to appear on facades and walls across the city of Wrocław, thus illuminating patches of colour daubed by the regime over anti-regime slogans. These dwarves soon evolve into a symbol of the Orange Alternative protest movement, which resorted to creative and imaginative means in order to oppose the socialist apparatus of power.

Come the 1980s Poland finds itself in an economic quagmire, with the general mood one of deep depression and uniformed police seen on every street corner. It is to this backdrop that innocuous-looking drawings of dwarves start to appear on facades and walls across the city of Wrocław: removing a slogan critical of the regime is one thing, covering up an image of a smiling dwarf however... This proved to be the start of an unparalleled political and social movement that drew upon the medium of art to call for disobedience and resistance.

The documentary ORANGE ALTERNATIVE portrays this wonderful revolution, which employed Dadaist means in order to disarm the establishment and bring a new sense of hope to society. KM
