When, back in the sixties, the powers that be in communist Poland publicise plans to build a health resort for the working class, the chosen architects manage to convince them that the health of the nation can only be ensured by bringing nature and architecture into harmony. Vertical, horizontal and diagonal lines, fundamentals of the architectural canon, are to reconcile the forests and mountains with the newly-constructed concrete cubes in order to give the structures a sense of functionality and purpose in the midst of the surrounding landscape.
In this minimalist work Ewa Trzcionka revisits the story of an idea and its implementation, whilst at the time introducing audiences to what is both a gem of Polish modernism and an important chapter of European cultural history. KM
