SLUMBERING CONCRETE: THE CITY THAT WAS TOO MODERN

Croatia, 2019, 48 Min

Skopje in the early hours of July 26th 1963. An earthquake destroys large sections of the capital of the Socialist Republic of Macedonia, more than a thousand of the city's inhabitants lose their lives. International aid arrives from both east and west, whilst Japanese architect Kenzō Tange designs the plan according to which the city is to be reconstructed. He only oversees the construction of the central station however, with additional structures, spread over the whole city, implemented by other architects. The overarching plan of a modern city fit for the future remains, not least out of financial considerations, a pipe dream.

The worst was yet to come however: the gaps that remained were later filled with neo-baroque and other historicist buildings and monuments. Modernist structures, in particular those in a brutalist style, are remodelled, as a result of which a unified city concept, be that one which had simply arisen organically, found itself replaced by a politically instrumentalised battle of styles. Saša Ban seeks out the opinion of architects and other experts. NaF
