Krejcar numbered amongst the most influential members of the Czechoslovak avant-garde and was, in his formative years, strongly influenced by Le Corbusier, as well as the Russian constructivists. In 1923 he participated in the Bauhaus exhibition in Weimar, and represented the art school in his homeland for some years.
Constructed during the interwar period, Machnáč sanatorium has found itself abandoned as of the turn of the century. Architecture and memorial enthusiasts continue to fight to save the structure, ownership of which has changed hands on numerous occasions in the meantime. One of these enthusiasts is artist Andrea Kalinová, who in 2011 together with colleague Martin Zaiček founded “abandoned (re)creation”: what started out as an artists' workshop has meanwhile evolved into a research-driven project. Taking Trenčianske Teplice as a starting point, the intention is to switch the focus onto other sanitoria in the future, and thus draw attention to the rich architectural heritage of modern-day Slovakia.
