The viewer is never quite able to grasp the scale of the memorial. In isolated images we see elements of the home, inclusive of its drab landscape, the decaying seating of an open-air cinema, a yellow-brick building and red clothing. It’s a long time since the swimming pool saw any water and the sitting areas have seen better days, in what was once the ‘Home of the Resistance’, in reference to the anti-Fascist resistance fighter and subsequent Yugoslav head of state Josip Broz, otherwise known as Tito, who was born in this very village.
Initially intended as a monument, hotel and eatery, Tito is said to have numbered amongst the complex’s guests, and yet today only a handful of brave souls continue to look after the surrounding territory, wandering through the library, moving plants around and mowing the law. The building is crumbling, just like the ideals behind its construction. Though new investors continue to get cold feet, the complex at least receives cinematic tribute here from film critic, director and curator Ivan Ramljak. NaF
