An off-screen narrator describes how peaceful it used to be in the village. But then Africans and other refugees suddenly started appearing. Fears escalate, but the “blacks” at least come to church. One of the women villagers says smugly: “Perhaps Hitler also went to mass each Sunday.” The older villagers soon see that there isn't any danger from the migrants. The “newcomers”, on the other hand, who have come from the city, see the potential for rapes, murders and robberies.
In her student film from 2015, director Krisztina Meggyes portrays the creation of an atmosphere claiming “they are to blame for everything” which has increasingly encouraged Viktor Orbán to pursue his xenophobic policies in the subsequent years. JT
