Every Easter, the inhabitants of the southern Polish village of Sternalice set off on horseback for an Easter ride lasting several hours, with holy songs on their lips and vodka in their pockets. This is where profanum meets sacrum. Rites and customs are an integral part of the culture, but are often difficult for onlookers to comprehend.

HORSE RIDERS takes the audience on this strange journey, brings them closer to an unfamiliar world – both through contemplation and fast editing, something that is as disturbing as it is fascinating. Shot in black and white, the experimental documentary shows a Christian tradition in impressive perspectives and is therefore not only a joy to behold for horse lovers and cultural anthropologists. KM
