MOTHER'S DAY

Dorka Vermes
Hungary, 2018, 15 Min

A mother-in-law both trying and hard to please: her visit brings unrest into the otherwise calm lives of two women. Equipped with unwanted gifts, as well as a wealth of opinions and prejudice, Mari soon gets to know her daughter's boundaries.

Juli and Réka are both impatiently awaiting an addition to the family. Only Juli's nervousness over the upcoming visit of her mother Mari dampens the mood. At first, she is welcome: it's a remarkable gesture given the year-long difficulties they've experienced, as hinted at by Juli's demeanour. Mari however cannot resist the constant snide remarks towards Réka, her daughter's long-term partner.

The struggle for acceptance and respect that people from marginalized groups are constantly forced to engage in is tiring. Thus, it is all the more gladdening to see someone making the sound decision to do away with negative influences and focus on the things that make life worth living. DJ
