ULTIMUL DRUM SPRE MARE

THE LAST TRIP TO THE SEASIDE

Adi Voicu
Romania, 2019, 12 Min

A muggy compartment on a delayed train: the nerves of the passengers are on edge, and so they proceed to give free rein to the prejudices they feel towards their seat-mate of Turkish descent. Even the young people, who otherwise pretend to be cosmopolitan and tolerant, display resentment in what would appear to be dangerous situation.

Six strangers locked up in a confined space for hours on end: an escalation seems inevitable. The burning fields surrounding the slowly-moving train come across as metaphorical flames that keep the passions in the compartment ablaze and thus fuel the deteriorating mood.

Who is free from prejudice? This seems to be the challenge that director Adi Voicu poses to his audiences. Without hesitation these would presumably pledge to react differently in such a situation. Aided by biting humour and a minimalist yet effective mise-en-scène he creates an entertaining tale that inspires reflection on one's own behaviour. DJ
