THE CHAIRS

Orkhan Aghazadeh
Great Britain, 2018, 20 Min

The youngsters carry their elderly parents, and thus the weight of prejudice and tradition, on their backs around the village. It is to this spectacular natural backdrop that an almost imperceptible, and quite unthinkable, love story plays out.

Despite their feelings for one another Kerim and Rena are not permitted to be together. Instead they are to both marry others. Under the watchful, stringent eyes of the villagers all that remains is fleeting glimpses and the play of lights after dark. The precise reasons for their forced separation remain unknown and yet the sorrowful longing on their faces speaks of the hopeless condition they find themselves in.

Director Orkhan Aghazadeh's camera wanders lovingly across the landscapes, both mystic and stunning, of his homeland, as well as the expressions of his cast, upon which the tragedy of the situation plays out. DJ
