VIRAGO

VIRAGO

Kerli Kirch-Schneider
Estonia, 2019, 15 Min

The little village of Virago would appear to be bedevilled: one after the other local males die before they are able to reach the age of forty. For their wives this is, for the most part, more a welcome relief than a problem in this black comedy on gender clichés.

Virago (lat.) – a dominant, powerful woman.

For some Virago is a paradise: the women go efficiently about their work, willingly help one another, and blithely dance and make merry. However not everyone's happy about the mysterious happenings in the village. Thus, it is that Olga leaves no stone unturned in trying to prevent the seemingly inescapable death of her husband.

Director Kerli Kirch Schneider drew inspiration from her ancestral village in VIRAGO, a tribute to her fellow countrymen who met a tragically early end as well as the women who, in spite of everything, managed to keep the community going. DJ
