Director Sarah Winkenstette tells with TOO FAR AWAY an exciting and entertaining story about the loss of one's homeland and the difficulties of finding one's way in a foreign place or country. The "refugee theme" plays only a skilful supporting role. Both children have to leave their homeland due to man-made destruction. Since the specific backgrounds and causes of these remain unmentioned, the film tells a universally understandable story about friendship and new beginnings.
TOO FAR AWAY won the prize for Best Children's Film at both the 48th Molodist International Film Festival in Kiev and the 15th Zurich International Film Festival. The German leading actor Yoran Leicher is no stranger and was last seen in the feature film GUT GEGEN NORDWIND (good against north wind). The Syrian leading actor Sobhi Awad, who plays the Tariq in the film and has only been living in Germany for eight months when filming began, is a new discovery. AD
