In the 1970s, Prof. Karel Žlábek presented Gustav Husák, head of state, with the spectacular idea of tying Czechoslovakia to the sea with a tunnel and building its own island from the excavated material: Adriaport. The time had already come in the spring of 1980: Husák was the first holidaymaker to embark on his journey to the Adriatic, followed soon afterwards by the first ordinary tourists. In front of the camera they still rave about the best summer of their lives on the bizarre holiday island. Despite the watchtower, border barriers and brutalist concrete buildings, it was said to have been beautiful. CF
