"Of course, it was betrayal. We already learned that at school: there is no telling. But you tattled. ... He told me, right after the Wall. Stuff it! A grappa, then it was done," says Andreas. He lives with his best friend Micha in the southern French Pyrenees. Micha had been spying on Andreas and Thomas, the sons of the philosopher Wolfgang Heise, for years, after he had spent a year and a half in jail in hooliganism in 1975. Nevertheless, the inseparable friends live under one roof again today. Micha had taken Andreas in when he was seriously ill and came to him in the mountains for his final days. He survived, and the old friendship is revived. In this documentary Heise lets us participate in a very personal reappraisal of betrayal and GDR history that could hardly be more withheld and perhaps for this reason comes so close to real life. KF

Thomas Heise - born in 1955 in East Berlin, Germany. He worked for several years as an assistant director at DEFA Studio for Feature Film before studying directing at the former HFF “Konrad Wolf”. He dropped out because his first film WHY MAKE A FILM ABOUT PEOPLE LIKE THEM? was banned in the GDR – like many of his other documentaries. He was then a director at the Berliner Ensemble for many years, until 1998.
