VOLCANO

Roman Bondarchuk
Ukraine, Germany, 2018, 106 Min

With VOLCANO, Roman Bondarchuk has created a seemingly surreal world that oscillates between real madness and a fantastic dream, capturing the main character in a mixture of fascination and fear. In wonderful scenes and not without humour, cruel reality and human survival strategies are interwoven.

Lukas is stranded in the south of Ukraine as part of an OSCE mission. Anarchy and the law of the fittest rule here – no trace of state order. Lukas finds shelter with Vova and his family. Vova, once head of a fish farm, wants to earn money with Wehrmacht scrap and the mortal remains of German soldiers. Luke helps him with this, he falls in love with his daughter Marushka and seems to settle in this inhospitable world. The Ukrainian documentary filmmaker Roman Bondarchuk initially thought of this material as a documentary. The figure of the Vova goes back to a friend from his home region around the city of Kherson on the Dnieper, not far from the Crimea. When Bondarchuk researched for the film, the revolution came in 2014 and, as a result, the annexation of the Crimea and the war in the Donbass, the eastern part of the country. Together with the screenwriters, Bondarchuk condensed these events and local conditions into his first feature film. NaF
