1947 in a soviet forced labour camp. The Ukrainian independence fighter Danylo Chervoniy is repeatedly detained and his reputation for escaping is notorious. Therefore, from the beginning he is on the wanted list, with which the commander’s office plays the different political and national groups against each other.
The director Zaza Buadze presents with CHERVONIY the first part of a film series based on the book of the same name by Andrey Kokotiukha. Both book and film deal with the events surrounding the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, a history under fierce debate. This is because the Army at times of the Second World War collaborated with the National Socialist Germany and took part in the systematic murdering of Jews and massacres of Poles. The hope was that the Nazis would support their own nationalistic ambitions. This is why the role of the Army is controversially discussed, also in Ukraine, which doesn’t prevent Buadze rolling out the patriotic banner in the film. NaF
