A hydroelectric power station is being built in the valley, threatening the balance of nature and gradually draining the sacred well. Ali's sons don't care since their relationship to their father is broken. They rarely come to visit and have each chosen very different paths. While one of them is a priest and has the construction of a church as the centre of his life, another is following the Islamic religion. The third brother runs the sparsely attended village school and indulges in science. And Namme is also dissatisfied with her role. She is changed by her acquaintance and relationship with the foreigner Merab, who is not accepted by her father. She is torn back and forth between her family duties and the new kind of love affair.
An impressively staged universal conflict between tradition and modernity in the spirit of Andrey Tarkovsky. Mythical, fascinatingly composed images cast a spell over the audience. MM
