According to tradition, widows are immediately remarried in Svanetia, in north-western Georgia. Dinola's mother is also supposed to marry a suitor after the death of her husband. He puts a few cartridge cases on her parents' table as a dowry. A clear threat: rejecting the courtship would result in a blood feud. So Dinola's mother doesn’t have any other choice but to leave her daughter behind and follow the man.
Motivated by her own family history, Mariam Khatchvani uses impressive imagery to recall the trauma that many suffer as a result of traditional customs. MM
