Trailer
The gardener Miloš is in the process of saving valuable cacti from the German occupiers when he receives an unannounced visit from Jindřich and Karel. The two are part of a resistance group and try to persuade him to hide a bag of pamphlets. His wife Emilka protests, she fears problems. And not without cause: Jindřích and Karel are arrested, her brother-in-law Otto as well. The doctor Jiří Erben is also one of the group – but with good luck and the help of the pregnant Vilma he manages to escape arrest. And in the next few years he will become a reliable support for the women left behind.
Although the film focuses on the private history, director Hřebejk widens his focus repeatedly to deal with themes such as the expulsion of the Germans after the end of the war, among others. He skilfully illustrates the atmosphere of the times using archive material and the then popular music of the so-called Liberated Theatre. CF
