In her award-winning film, director Andrina Mračnikar does not attempt to "truthfully" reconstruct a historical event. Rather, she weaves a fine web of disparate fragments: the native-language story of the grandmother, yellowed photos and their stories, leaps of thought, shreds of memory. The images of authentic places seem unreal, when filmed with a hand-held camera from oblique angles and subjective perspectives. As unreal and fragmentary as the past inscribes itself in memory – a puzzle that never joins together to form a whole. GL
