Following the example of the American experimental filmmaker James Benning, Bernhard Sallmann develops his later pronounced purist style here – to fathom the invisible in the visible with a long, motionless gaze. In LAUSITZ 20x90 it is the past that still rises from the flooded pit, and as a treetop; water flows into it – the only thing that is in constant motion and pulsates through an ever-present network of pipes. The future of the “moonscape” as a lake district is already tangible, while the radios from the opencast mine still beep. News from a future that is now history. GL
