Kuba Czekaj
Poland, 2014, 17 Min

There are films that act like a pull on us, that lead us, with the power of images, into a strange world and tell stories that we cannot escape – and that put us into a liminal state that can be called a "pure cinematic experience".

Michał Hudzikowski

Kuba Czekaj, a new star of the young Polish directorial scene, shows moments of the life of a young woman with great subtlety and figurative refinement. We are in a swimming pool where the atmosphere, not the plot, guides our perception. Only the repeatedly displayed hour of the clock gives the place a tangible setting. Thus, the director builds the tension that puts the viewer in a kind of lurking, at the same time with the hope of solving the mystery of the images. Gradually the picture narrows as the narrative progresses until the story before our eyes dissolves into black nothing as the overture of death. The short portrait of loneliness is an exciting play with cinematic means and a grandiose demonstration that aesthetic emptiness can be a force field full of emotions and beauty. KM
