LETO

Kirill Serebrennikov
Russia, France, 2018, 128 Min

Let’s rock. Leningrad, a summer at the start of the 1980s. The records of western bands, whose music is officially banned, are sold on the black market. Led Zeppelin and David Bowie have their share of fans. But the local music scene is also booming. Mike is a successful singer and helps another – Viktor Tsoi – to become one.

Charades

During a happening at the beach, Mike enjoys the jubilation of his fans. His wife Natasha is slightly bored of the ritual. When the young Viktor arrives with his guitar hoping to get to know his idol, it is first Natasha who becomes aware of his talents. Mike is also visibly impressed by Viktor’s talents. Together they make the ambitious musician known in the music scene and help him become what he should; an icon of soviet rock for the 1980s.

Kirill Serebrennikov manges in his wonderful film to capture the atmosphere of the youth generation in the Soviet Union in the pre-perestroika era. With music from Iggy Pop and Talking Heads he achieves unforgettable anarchistic scenes and creates an original monument to the cult singer Viktor Tsoi and the band Kino. MM
