Hidden on a sewage pipe, a roly-poly forest goblin is shooting an air rifle at passing cars. One of them is being driven by 14-year-old Mára, who can only just duck away to avoid being hit. When the forest goblin comes nearer, Mára recognizes the fat Heduš under the moss vest, an outsider without friends. He finally convinces Mára to take him with him along – and so they drive through the frosty landscape, exchange some choice expletives as they dream of having sex for the first time, encounter some unpleasant adults, and then also cross path with some policemen.

At first glance, the boys don't seem very likeable, and are rather full of swagger and cheekiness. However, the wonderful amateur actors also show the boy’s ingenuity, natural wit, insecurity and vulnerability, and so we are soon keeping our fingers crossed for them. That's what the members of the Czech Film Academy probably did – at any rate, they have sent the Slovenian director's film into the race for the next Oscar. CF
