THE LOAD

Ognjen Glavonić
Serbia, France, Croatia, Iran, Qatar, 2018, 98 Min

Vlada drives a truck to Belgrade. The bridge is destroyed and the important roads closed. In the course of bloody battles between Serbian military units and the Kosovo Liberation Army war crimes are committed. The whole of Serbia is shaken by NATO bombing raids. Vlada does not know what he is transporting, yet the need for money leads him to betray his morals.

As it turns out later on, his cargo consists of the bodies of massacred Kosovo Albanians, who are to be taken to a police station near the capital so that the war crimes of the Serb-dominated army are not exposed. The topic has already been dealt with by Ognjen Glavonić in his documentary DEPTH TWO (2016). THE LOAD keeps its viewers at a distance with barren dialogues and a consistent staging in shades of grey and brown, at the same time introducing them to the closed, emotional universe of its anti-hero and his whole country. Vlada is an accomplice, even a partner in crime, one who doesn't dare to defend himself, who sacrifices his inner morals in order to provide his family with an income, but who, in the end, loses the trust of his son. He represents a generation that has ensconced itself without optimism between shared responsibility for the wars in former Yugoslavia and hopes and fears for a better present. WMH
