Sitting alone on the roof of a forlorn beach house Rebecca reflects upon how life came to lead her to what she calls the "gift" in her ever-expanding stomach...
As a youngster she used to visit her grandfather in this remote coastal area; it was thus she made friends with the red-haired Tommy with whom, in the course of many a summer adventure spent together, she comes to develop a deep understanding.
Twelve years later Rebecca returns to take up residence in the house of her grandfather and seeks out her childhood friend, who it turns out also still harbours deep-seated feelings for her. The impassioned relationship doesn't last long however, as Tommy has his life cut short by a car accident. Crestfallen, Rebecca feels she can no longer go on; it is thus she stumbles across the controversial idea of having him cloned. Remaining in the isolated community by the sea Rebecca dedicates herself completely to little Tommy who leads a joyful childhood. As the years pass however Rebecca is unable to escape the complexity of her decision: for how long will she be able to hide the truth from Tommy and the curious neighbours? When he grows up and looks exactly like her now-deceased lover how will she explain the peculiar feelings she experiences that this new Tommy is unable to comprehend?
