Eleven-year-old Mari makes a peculiar acquaintance in the park; an elderly woman, Maria Panacek, wearing one red and one black stocking. The curious woman exerts such a fascination on Mari that they make friends and proceed to meet up regularly, even against the wishes of Mari's parents. They go for walks and hold remarkable conversations. One day Maria Panacek escapes from her home and Mari resolves to help her, even though this is one adventure doomed to failure given Miss Panacek's reliance on medical support. The friendship neverless remains highly unusual.
